On March 11 and 12, 2025, the second EFSA International Retail Event took place in the Netherlands. Around 70 retailers and suppliers came together for two energetic days of inspiration, networking, and insights into the future of garden retail. The program included visits to garden centers, presentations, and stops at Tradefair Rijswijk and Westfield Mall of the Netherlands.
In this article we share the highlights.
Kipster
Ruud Zanders, co-founder of Kipster, shared how his team reshaped the egg industry with sustainable, animal-friendly practices. Kipster uses food waste to feed chickens and supplies major retailers like Lidl. The story sparked ideas on applying similar innovations in other sectors.
Intratuin Rhoon
Rhoon isn’t the largest Intratuin, but it stands out thanks to a close-knit and dedicated team. Owners Jeroen and Stephan Droogh highlighted the staff as key to success. The store has the highest Christmas sales of all Intratuin locations.
Tuincentrum Ockenburgh
Now led by three brothers, the garden center aims to be the most sustainable in the Netherlands. One creative step: selling ‘rescued’ plants: healthy but slightly damaged specimens that would otherwise go to waste.
Westfield Mall of the Netherlands
A retail destination that combines sustainability with experience. The mall has over 300 stores, many restaurants, and entertainment. The Bever shop’s repair station, where visual mending was demonstrated live, attracted special attention.
Global Garden
A hidden gem with 50,000 m² of outdoor space and stunning displays indoors. The team’s creativity, especially with silk flowers, made a big impression.
It’s a wrap, for now
Participants praised the event for its fresh ideas, practical examples, and relaxed networking. With its mix of innovation, sustainability, and hands-on experience, the EFSA International Retail Event is quickly becoming a must-attend for forward-thinking garden and lifestyle retailers.
